Out and Back
This collection grew from the repeated circuit from my home, to the ocean, and back again. We are lucky enough to be close enough to the water that this pilgrimage is readily accessible. Just like running sprints back in the days of soccer practice, there’s a joyous tagging of the halfway point before turning around and rubberbanding back. As with any cardio exertion, whether walking, running, or riding, the body settles throughout, attention resets, the brain chills out after rattling around a bit, and we return having gone somewhere and seen something new.
My out and back is along the Ventura riverpath to the ocean. The riverbed comes into view, then the tall waving grasses, then the rippling tide on the shoreline, and then back to my backyard garden. Zooming in while zoning out.

Tall grasses waving overhead, growing impossibly fast. Dodging swarms of gnats, movement to my right, camouflaged birds tucked into the brush. The riverbed widening into an estuary, a passable expanse before the grand reveal.

A rhythm and pattern that feels both repetitive and freshly anew every few seconds. Big ebbs and flows, while small corners and gullies continuing to ripple and shimmer. A representation of what was there, and what is coming.

Layers of grasses, wild fennel, buckwheat, and cattails along the riverbed. Punctuated white puffs held up by dried stalks, appearing almost like a floating layer of seedtops.
