Early birds getting worms. Both the birds and myself. A country road, rising summer heat, the smell of sweetgrass in the air. Looking out over the meadow, it felt like peering into a world unto itself.

By evening, the gloves are back on. A weed here. A bloom there. Another start added like a seasoning. Working toward something beautifully, happily unfinished.

A stand of daisies gathered there like an oasis in a sea of green. I found myself veering off the trail, drawn closer. Tall, sturdy stems held bright blooms high above the grasses, clustered together as if they had chosen this place to weather the coming heat.
